There are probably a number of reason why he said... "Kid's names," said Merridew, "Why should I be Jack, I'm Merridew." He probably felt that by opting for the formaility of using his surname it differentiated him from the other boys and made him seem more adult by comparison. Jack probably saw this as strengthening his claim to be leader. Jack was a boy who enjoyed being in command and he made a point of stating his own terms rather than simply appearing to comply with someone elses idea of how things should be done. Ironically in his attempt to sound more adult Jack simply conformed to the boarding school convention of using boys' surnames, which actually emphasised his youth.
