1991-97
Actually the Harry Potter series takes place from 1991 to sometime after January of 1998 because in the last book they were still searching for horcrux when Harry's eighteenth birthday rolled around.
The movies are set in the same time frames but there are several errors. For example, the bridge destroyed in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the millennium bridge which wasn't built until several years after the film was set. They also tend to wear more modern clothing.
You would have to see all the movies and books to be exact. So here's how I am positive. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (this is the book and movie) Harry and Hermione are in Godrick's Hallow looking for the grave of Harry's parents. It says they died in the year 1981. How old was Harry then? Well, in the movie (and the book I belive) Harry was being interveiwed for the Daily Prophet by Rita Skeeter who claims he's 12 but Harry insists he is 14. Later, after Cedrick Diggery is killed by Voldemort and Wormtail. Then when Voldemort is all re-formed and stuff (creepy...) he is talking to other deatheaters and says something like "It's been 13 years since the boy who lived..." Since he's 14 there that means he was 1 in 1981. And also he was born 1980. So he's just turned 11 when he goes to Hogwarts. So by then it is 1991. So by his seventh year he is 17 and by then it is 1998. And if you want to go farther in the book and movie at the end there was a 19 years later, where Harry and Ginny were married, and Ron and Hermione are married, and Neville is a Hogwarts teacher and they are sending their kids to Hogwarts, yadah yadah yadah.... Since the end of The Deathly Hallows is 1998, 19 years later would be 2017. Also, Harry, Ron, and Hermione would be 36 and Ginny would be 35. There. That's more than enough specifics.
you take NEWT in 7 year i.e final year there.
Harry was born 31st July 1980 so the period he lived in in the books is the 80s and 90s. The Battle of Hogwarts was in 1997 which is his last year of Hogwarts and then it goes 19 years into the future.

Yes! The Harry Potter books are wonderful for pre-teens ages 10 and up, but may be a little dark for younger ages. J.K. Rowling does an amazing job when writing the Harry Potter books. There are 7 Harry Potter Books in the series: Year One: Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone (or the Socerer's Stone) Year Two: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Year Three: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Year Four: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Year Five: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phonix Year Six: Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince Year Seven: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows All of the books are good, and so are the Harry Potter movies! But remember, always read the book first because the movies don't go into much detail as the books do!
