Eight Westerns have been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, but did not win. They were: "In Old Arizona (1927/28), "Stagecoach" (1939), "The Ox-Bow Incident" (1943), "High Noon" (1952), "Shane" (1953), "Giant" (1956), "How the West Was Won" (1963) and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969).

Only three Westerns have won the Best Picture Oscar: "Cimarron" (1931), "Dances with Wolves" (1990) and "Unforgiven" (1992).
