According to the website IMDB, he had 171 credits for a lifetime of acting. Pickens, whose real name was Louis Bert Lindley, Jr., appeared in numerous films and television series during his 30 years as an actor specializing in cowboys roles.

The former rodeo rider, whose acting career began in 1950, probably is best remembered for his appearances in such films as Stanley Kubrick's 1964 black comedy "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb," Sam Peckinpah's 1972 heist film "The Getaway" and Mel Brooks' 1974 Western comedy "Blazing Saddles."

In "Dr. Strangelove," Pickens appeared as U.S. Air Force Major T.J. "King" Kong, who commanded an Air Force B-52 bomber preparing to nuke sites in the Soviet Union. But when the first bomb -- nicknamed Hi There! -- fails to dislodge, Major Kong decides to take a hands-on approach to the problem. The Texan ends up riding the bomb to glory as if it was a bucking bronco. Writer-director Lawrence Kasdan ("Body Heat," "The Big Chill") called it "one of the three or four most famous images in American movies."

A native Californian, Pickens dropped out of school at the age of 16 to join a rodeo. Because his father was opposed to his riding, he needed a pseudonym. He once recalled: ''While I was fretting about what to call myself, some old boy sittin' on a wagon said, 'Why don't you call yourself Slim Pickens, 'cause that's shore what yore prize money'll be'.''

His expertise with horses led to stunt work in the movies and his long career as an actor.

He died on December 8, 1983 after brain surgery at the age of 64.
