Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates of Kos is considered to be the founder of western medicine. He established medicine as a profession and separated it from philosophy and ritualistic religion. He is believed to have written the Hippocratic Oath, which includes the first doctor's code, or catch phrase, "First, do no harm." The original Hippocratic Oath was written in the 4th century BC.
