They were English, so presumably it did. The Beatles were so influential that in a sense they defined what was English for that era. In another sense, popular music is so international that it's hard to know which English speaking country has produced something.

No. The Tornados (led by Joe Meek) beat them to it, with their #1 hit "Telstar" (named after the first communications satellite) in August 1962.
