In the 1950's, Rock 'n Roll was considered scandalous music. It was unlike any previous music. Elvis Presley was considered shocking for his music and his sensuality but especially because many people thought his hip movements were obscene or at least overtly sexual. Ed Sullivan had him on his TV Show but the cameras were only allowed to film him from the waist up. His mannerisms were nothing like today, he basically shook his hips from side to side.

They only showed Elvis from the waist up as his grinding pelvis movements were offensive.

His movements combined with this vocal inflections and his use of the standing microphone (i.e. they did not have wireless microphones then).
