Britain is famous for rock music (sometimes called Britpop in America) Some famous English rock bands are:
The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Who, The Clash and
the awesomes.
Many young people listen to 'Indie' music, which is rock music that is not too heavy. Famous English Indie bands are Oasis, Blur and Coldplay.
Electronica/Dance music is very popular in the UK, as well as all over Europe. Electronic genres which originated in the UK include Drum n Bass, Dubstep, Acid House, Rave, Trip Hop and Hardcore.
Having said all that, the UK charts are like any other charts in the world - a mixture of Pop Idol competition winners and American/British singers.
The best-selling singles of 2008 were by:
X-Factor finalists, Duffy, Nickelback, Katy Perry and Estelle.
You know we aren't all that strange XD
Alot of our most popular music, like R&B, Dance and Rap is imported from the US but we also mix it with alot of British bands such as Arcit Monkeys etc. Though as we aren't as populated as the USA we have fewer bands etc.
There were and are( look at the Beatles0 various styles and genres- but interesting enough- Opera and Classical Music ( some excerptions such as Elgar"s Pomp and circumstance- or Graduation march) - are not particularily popular. Most Empire opera stars came from ( colonies) such as Canada and Australia ( such as Dame Nellie Melba). Opera not very popular in England and in fact some Brits make fun of it- with jingles like the High Cockilorum- Tra la lee tral la la-0 cock- a lorum! I can"t explain it. not true int he days of Handel, though.
It depends on the individual. But as a whole, it would probably be the popular music in America which has been passed onto England.
