Talking Heads are a band that is hard to classify. Their sound changed heavily with their career. Their early sound (see: Talking Heads: 77 and More Songs About Buildings and Food) were very New Wave/Folk with even a tiny influence of punk. The middle of their career (see Fear of Music, Remain in Light and Speaking in Tongues) had a very experimental quality, exploring ranges of African and Funk while integrating it with rock. The end of their career (see Little Creatures, True Stories and Naked) went back to their New Wave style while still maintaining a cultural rock aspect to it. Every song on the album True Stories literally expands a different genre, including hard rock, African, latino, soul and even country. They are truly a band that can't be simplified.

∙ 14y agoYes, they were one of the first punk bands. The punk scene took off in New York City in the late sixties to early seventies, at East Village dive bars like CBGB's and Max's Kansas City. The world's first punk bands honed their skills and developed their style at these places -- bands like the Ramones, the Dictators, the Patti Smith Group, the Dead Boys, the Heartbreakers...and the Talking Heads.
