Contrary to music 'experts' who seem to know nothing, the mods did not listen to The Who, The Small Faces and Chris Farlowe. The music of the mods was black American music which ideally had a solid dance beat; but not the 90 mph stuff later adopted by the northern soul guys. The mods danced in a cool way not in a frenetic way, often picking up just every other beat. The image of the dance had to match the mohair suit and silk handkerchief. The music; the early Motown records were often played but as soon as the label became POPular they were dropped by the soul purists. The Atlantic, Stax, Sue, Chess and Volt labels provided the real backdrop to the mod scene. Let me give you a few tracks to check out. They may be hard to find but well worth the effort.
