"Letters, we've got letters, we've got lots and lots of letters"...was the first line of a ditty used to introduce a TV-audience write-in song request segment that was a regular feature of the Perry Como variety show on NBC during the mid to late 1950's. While a small chorus of women sang this song in the background, one would see a scene of the post office processing mail, changing to a sack of mail being delivered to Perry (or "Mr. C" as he became known) who would take a seat on a plain round wooden bar stool. He would draw out a letter, supposedly at random (yeah, right) and after saying from whom the letter was sent (invariably a woman), would sing the requested song.
Sometime around 1960, the ditty was changed to the following with a considerably less phrenetic, more romantic and lilting melody:
"Sing to me, Mr. C, sing to me;
A song that I've been waiting just to hear.
Just for me, Mr. C, just for me;
And everybody else will disappear."
