Harry Potter's aunt, Petunia Dursley, and uncle, Vernon Dursley, were very neglectful, bordering on abusive. It is implied that they frequently locked him in his bedroom, which was the cupboard under the staircase, for accidental magic, believing that they could rid him of the magic this way. It was also implied that they denied him food during these times. He was made to do most household chores such as cooking and gardening, while their son Dudley did absolutely nothing all day but eat, play Video Games and watch TV. They did not ever show him any sort of affection, and regularly belittled him for his 'freakiness' a.k.a. his magical abilities. However, this was out of fear of his magic rather than actual negative feelings for him.

The Dursleys treat Harry badly because

1. Mrs. Dursley was jealous that her sister Lily was a witch

2. The Dursleys don't like magic

3. They don't want to take care of him because they think wizards are filth

Ever since Harry's mother Lily (Aunt Petunia's sister) and Petunia were young, Petunia was very jealous of Lily's ability to do magic. Being married to Uncle Vernon and having to raise Harry did not increase her liking of them at all.

Harry's aunt and uncle have never shown him any love or appreciation. He sleeps in a cupboard under the stairs in a four bedded house where only two are occupied. Even when he is given a bedroom it's the smallest one in the house. He is forced to wear old clothes of Dudley who is several sizes bigger than him and his aunt and uncle allow Dudley to bully him (physically and emotionally).

They generally stay out of his way and pretend he doesn't exist. In the second book they even locked him in his room. placing bars on his window and refusing to allow him to go back to Hogwarts.

They've never celebrated or even acknowledged his birthday and send him pitiful or no Christmas presents. They don't give him any money and he is blamed for everything. Once they even tried to get him to stay at Hogwarts over the summer.

Upon their final farewell it is only Dudley (his cousin) who acknowledges there is something wrong with the fact they are leaving him behind to fend for himself and never see them again, his aunt attempts to say something but then leaves and uncle doesn't even bother. In fact his uncle was annoyed at being forced to say goodbye.

She wants to be normal, have a normal family, and a normal life with Uncle Vernon and her "Diddykinz" (Dudley). Her sister (Harry's mother), and Harry, jeopardize that greatly. Also, as it reveals in one of the Harry Potter books, when Snape and Lily (again Lily is Harry's mother) find out that Aunt Petunia had written a letter to Dumbledore, asking to be accepted into Hogwarts, even though she was just a muggle (non-magical person). From that we can infer that Aunt Petunia was also jealous of her sister.
