Cut or mill the lumber right before gluing,

Oily hardwoods require an utterly different procedure than plywood or fur lumber, which may be be glued with almost anything in any manner. Low-strength woods and consumer-grade one-component glues are very forgiving, but not high-performance.

Do not use any solvent to clean natural oils off the wood surface, as the solvents will be absorbed into the wood and attack the glue that would be used.

The secret to gluing oily woods is to use a glue that is ITSELF capable of dissolving the natural oils of wood, therefore those natural oils do not cause glue-line failures.

One such glue is the "Oak and Teak Epoxy Glue", made by Smith & Co. Find the product with an internet search.

Clamping is not a good idea, as the natural porosity of wood will wick the glue away from the glue-line, leaving a glue-starved joint that usually fails readily. Use bungee cords or dead weight to gently hold the pieces together until the glue sets.

Unlike most oily hardwoods, Ebony has a WAX, not an oil. A wax is a frozen oil that melts above room temperature. To glue ebony in particular, the wood must be heated enough to melt the wax; typically above 140F. Then use the glue as above.

The type of wood you use in the construction of your cue will determine whether the cue will be softer hitting or harder hitting.
