What things happen in the 1st Harry Potter book but not in the movie?

oooh, there were many things. (in order):

Vernon dursley goes to work in the book, where he is hugged by a wierd muggle who is happy that the dark lord has gone. vernon over hears the name Harry Potter and freaks out in panic. which never happens in the movie. also Harry Potter is woken by the scream of Petunia Dursley when she discovers him on the doorstep of her house whilst putting out the milk. this never happens in the movies.

in the book, Harry meets Draco Malfoy in "Madam malkin's robes for all occasions" which doesnt happen in the book.

as the train leaves platform 9 & three quarters Fred & george don't joke about sending Ginny a toilet seat ;P

The Sorting hat doesnt sing a song.

Harry & Draco don't plan to have a midnight duel.

Harry's book doesnt get confiscated for being outside the school (as it is borrowed from the library and snape confiscates it saying its against school rules for them to be taken from the building- this leads to harry going to get it back and over hearing quirrel and snape talking about the injury snape has. which DOES happen in the movie.)

Harry and Hermione don't have to take Nobert the dragon up to a tower to be taken away by friends of charlie Weasley. they do this to spare Hagrid the trouble he would be in had the dragon been discovered.

and when Ron, Harry and Hermione go thru the trapdoor, they don't have to face a troll. event tho the troll is already knocked out from quirrell. but it's still there anyhoo.

There maybe more, but i don't have the book with me at the minute, so I'm going on memory. (Which usually doesn't fail me) :) i hope this helps you,
