They learned about Dumbledore's past. The points that were important to the plot involved his family and relationship with Gellert Grindelwald.

Albus Dumbledore had two younger siblings, Aberforth and Ariana Dumbledore. When Ariana was six, young muggle boys saw her performing magic and were terrified by what they had seen. The boys attacked Ariana and left her mentally and emotionally scarred and she could no longer control her magic powers. Their father Percival was sentenced to Azkaban after he attacked the young boys. He never admitted his reason for attacking them because he knew the Ministry would put his daughter in St Mungo's if they found out. This brought shame on the family, and many people believed that Percival (as a pure-blood wizard) was a big believer in blood purity. However, his own wife was a muggle-born witch so that could not be true. He died at Azkaban.

The Dumbledore's the moved to Godric's Hollow where they could keep Ariana a secret. They pretended that she was ill, although rumours spread that Ariana was a squib and was being kept locked away for shaming the family. While Albus and Aberforth went to Hogwarts, Kendra stayed home and looked after Ariana. When she was fourteen, Ariana lost control and a backfiring jinx killed her mother.

Albus was then forced to put his life on hold to look after his young sister. He was bored of being forced to stay at home as he wanted to travel the world and make a difference. It is during this time he met Gellert Grindelwald, the nephew of neighbour Bathilda Bagshot. Albus and Gellert tried to track down the legend of the Deathly Hallows and he become fascinated with the idea of dominating the wizarding world. Dumbledore also fell in love with Grindelwald.

One night, Aberforth confronted his brother and Grindelwald on their plans because he believed they were neglecting Ariana. This resulted in a battle between the three, which Ariana walked into the middle of and as a result was killed. Nobody knows who killed her, and Grindelwald left the next day.

Both Albus and Aberforth were devastated and would feel guilty for the rest of their lives. Albus later regretted his relationship with Grindelwald and brought him down in 1945.

Rita Skeeter portrayed these events in an extremely negative way and while they did indeed occur, it is likely many were exaggerated and some may even have been made up.
