Yes, the wizard(Gandalf) likes Bilbo very much. It is by the will of Gandalf that Bilbo comes along with the dwarves for the quest. His concern for Bilbo can be seen when all the dwarves come out from goblin's cave but Bilbo remains behind. Gandalf continues to visit Bilbo even after the end of dwarves quest.

Yes and no, The Hobbit was written before The Lord of the Rings.When Tolkien's publishers asked for a sequel to The Hobbit he gave them The Lord of the Rings with much more detail than The Hobbit. Then to make the two stories agree he had to go back and edit parts of the original Hobbit.The Hobbit involves Gandalf the wizard along with Bilbo Baggins and how the ring came into his possession. So yes it is part of The Lord of the Rings universe and series but it's not technically one of the six Lord of the Rings books. Those books were published in three volumes, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.

Bilbo finds the ring that he later finds out belongs to Gollum who lost it. Gollum riddles with him in order to eat him, after bilbo asks him what is in his pocket he gets it after he helped bilbo get out of the mountain.
The dwarves finally realize that Bilbo actually isn't as stupid as they thought he was -- they know his capabilities and are glad that he came along. That change of attitude in them is what finally resolved the mild conflict between them and the hobbit.
