When Jack painted his face with red & white clay and added black lines with charcoal it acted like a mask, behind which he could watch the antics of the boy wearing the paint. It divorced or separated him from his own actions, so that he felt no remorse, no shame and no guilt for anything which the 'painted savage' did.

Jack was the antagonist of Ralph. He threw away all of his moral restraints, to embrace the savage qualities of an animal. All he desired was power, and control.
