Before they leave on the Cattle Drive she convinces Jake to take her along..."I'm goin' with ya when you leave." Jake says "Well ain't you a hard one to please." She says "No I'm not. I just wanna go to San Francisco." Jake tells Laurie (actually I think it's spelled Lorrie because her name is Lorena) that he wants to go to San Antone (San Antonio, TX) for a spell to gamble she says "I don't wanna go to San Antone." After Jake abandons her at camp to gamble in San Antonio Gus stops by for a visit and takes her for a swim in the creek. Before Blue Duck rides in for 'a water' Lorrie says that she doesn't need Jake. To Gus she says "I'd go with you to San Francisco, if you was a mind to." -- that may be a little off...(Blue Duck later comes back and kidnaps her when Newt is the only one left to guard her.) after Gus saves her from Blue Duck's crew, in the Adobe Walls after silently playing a hand of Poker with Gus she says "They shouldn't a took me Gus..." and then proceeds to wail. When Call brings Gus back through Ogala on the way to Lonesome Dove for burial, he delivers two letters one to Clara and one to Lorrie that Gus wrote on his death bed. Lorrie spends the whole day into the night at the casket on the wagon. Clara comes out and offers to read her letter to her, as Lorrie cannot read. Lorrie says through tears "I think I'll just keep it" and places it in her pocket. For such a memorable character it's surprising that she doesn't have more significant quotes...I guess those were reserved for the main characters because Gus and Call have the two best...."It Ain't Dyin' I'm talking about...it's livin'" and "I hate rude behavior in a man...won't tolerate it" respectively. Hope this helps...Lonesome Dove's # Fan...S.B.
