With the ship stopping at the island and an officer coming on the beach, saved Ralph who was coming so close to a violent death. The officer also stopped the other boys from continuing on to kill Ralph. The ship saves Ralph and alll of the remaining boys. Seeing an adult and being saved, makes all of the boys emotional.
What is the contrast between jack and Simon responses to the bushes around them?
The reaction of the boys symbolizes how each will respond to the island as time goes by. Simon appreciates natural, fragile beauty of the bushes and calls them "candlebuds". Jack, on the other hand, has the opposite reaction and begins to viciously slash the bushes with his knife because they cannot be used as food.
