The original (and best!!) version was done by Valerie Carter from her album "A Stone's Throw". It was featured in the late 70's teen angst movie "Over the Edge".

Actually. The original was done by soul family group - The Five Stairsteps in 1970 and many singers have covered this song since then. In my opinion, this was the best version because uplifting message and music. Whenever I play this song at a party, everyone is caught singing along to it.

I also like Beth Orton's acoustic version because it is stripped down and done in a somber tone. I always teach my students this song every year so that they get the message - "that things are gonna be easier" and "things are gonna be brighter"
