Jean-Michel Basquiat did not attend formal art school. He learned at City as School in Brooklyn, NY where he met his friend (and classmate) Al Diaz. The two young men took up graffiti art around the streets of New York. He lived a difficult and lonely life, got his start with graffiti and selling postcards until he was discovered in the early 1980s. Unfortunately, Basquiat did not live to see his full potential blossom. He died of a drug overdose in 1988. There's a great movie based on his life. It's called "Basquiat" and it was directed by Julian Schnabel. It was released in 1996.
