During his years in Springfield, Lincoln was an enthusiastic fiddle player, often playing for dances. As a young man in Indiana, he was a drummer in militia, and a member of a string band that played an occasional dance. While in the White House, Lincoln occasionally picked up a violin to play, though less often than he had earlier in life. He occasionally went to the band concerts in which the Marine Band played, and on one occasion at the White House, Lincoln joined in on violin. He also enjoyed the music of Stephen Foster. Some reports suggest that Lincoln had a good singing voice, while others say that he could carry a tune, but was not gifted with a fine singing voice.
