Bennett Cerf died of natural causes. According to The New York Times obituary of August 29, 1971, he died following surgery. He had also been hospitalized late the previous year for an abdominal operation. His body was cremated and the ashes spread out over his beloved Mt. Kisco estate. There was no shroud of secrecy over his death, just a promise of privacy from his widow.

Conspiracy theories are a cultural disease that began in the late 1940s with a short flurry of supposed UFO sightings. It subsequently faded from public consciousness for a decade until exploding again in 70s media, with most of its popularity directly attributable to baby boomers in the United States.

In 70 years, we have established from hard evidence that Richard Nixon committed treasonable acts during the 1968 presidental election that affected his judgment four years later during Watergate. We learned that Churchill wanted to kill Charles de Gaulle in London, he had spies in de Gaulle's house ready to do the deed, but FDR discouraged it. We learned that all those years he was an on-screen hunk, Rock Hudson was gay. We learned all these things from subsequent evidence, Nixon and LBJ's tapes, declassified correspondence in the UK, Rock's own admission as he suffered from AIDS. They were deceptions that eventually leaked out for various reasons over time. Deceptions are real, but no one cares anymore. They happened half a century ago.

However, in the same period we have been unable to capture one clear photo or video of a UFO. Billions of cameras on this planet but nothing more than grainy images--even from the U.S. military! We have not moved any closer to establishing there was more than one gunman at JFKs assassination, or Lincoln's, or McKinley's or...take your pick! Every bad FOX TV show depicting fake Moon landings has been dispelled with hard data. See, we still have all the raw data, mountains of it. It would be harder to fake that data than fake the landing. We have land-based telescopes that can now produce images on the landing sites on the Moon. We have international satellites that can resolve footprints on the surface.

But none of this will ever discourage the conspiracy theorist, for they have powerful advantage. Ignorance. With ignorance the C.T.s can ignore the evidence, cherry pick the data, and land at their predetermined conclusion without effort. They can generate conspiracies where none exist simply by claiming it! In fact, we presently are living through the salad days of ignorance, and conspiracy thrives.

Conspiracies are fake, but lots of people indulge in them because they require no critical thought, no proof, and like Marilyn Monroe, they never age.

The cause of death has been shrouded in secret, as though his wife Phyllis was attempting to conceal something. He was known to be healthy and never missed appointments until his public life diminished with the termination of 'What's My Line'. The reluctance of the family introduces the possibility of unusual events ,as suicide or an unknown life phase, that would serve as an embarassment.
