I assume this is a gastric or duodenal ulcer. Treatment depends on the cause. The most common cause is a bacteria known as H pylori. There are several lab tests to determine if this bacteria is present. Any Family Practice Physician, Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner can order the specific test based on your circumstances. If this test is positive, treatment consists of , usually, 2 antibiotics for two weeks, plus an acid reducing medication known as a proton pump inhibitor- Prilosec is an example, but there are others. The PPI is continued for 8 weeks. There are alternative treatments, but all include an antibiotic/PPI combination. There are other causes of ulcers, such as medication induced from medications such as Non Steroidal Anti-inlammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, Naprosyn, etc, used on a chronic basis. There are several other not so common causes of ulcers. Treatments vary as to the specific cause. It is important to see a medical provider if you think you might have an ulcer, as symptoms associated with ulcers can also be from other medical conditions. Further, ulcers, if treated improperly or inadequately, can result in serious and /or fatal complications.
