self loathing- progressively throughout the book you see Griffin begin to see himself differently. He slowly comes to hate the reflection in the mirror. this loathing comes from the injustices shown towards him because he took on the appearance of a black man. He is an educated and intelligent man but simply because of his skin color he is treated in a less than human manner when he is not only seeking employment but even when all he wishes to do is take a drink or go to the rest room.

strength- a second theme that can be found when reading Black Like Me is strength. The type of strength shown in the book is a quiet one. The strength of people suffering an injustice or hardship equally and therefore supporting each other through that hardship or injustice. This is shown in the novel when Griffin boards a bus and in the face of white persecution fellow members of the black race support Griffin and call him back into the safety of their numbers. Some people may argue this is not strength, it is falling under the power of others in a submissive nature. But when someone has the ability to be in the face of a fight and be knowledgable enough to step down from the confrontational situation and fight the fight with a quiet dignity is that not strength? How many people can be fillied with anger at an injustice but still step down and choose the peaceful but effective approach?

The 1966 film Black Girl mainly deals with racism and colonialism as seen through the eyes of a Senegalese woman. After moving from Senegal to France she experiences alienation and suppression at the hand of the French couple employing her.
