What is the theme for the story The Hitchhiker by Lucille Fletcher?

A man leaves his mother to go on a road trip for a few weeks. She tells him to be careful and to not pick up any hitchhikers along the way. While driving, he gets into an accident. It is dark and he can't see where he is going. Though he is dead, he doesn't realize it. Soon, he starts seeing this creepy guy following him. The man thinks the guy is a hitchhiker who wants a ride in his car. He tries to drive away from the guy but he keeps appearing out of no where saying, "Halooo." He tries telling people about it but they don't see the guy or believe him. He picks up a hitchhiker and tells her about the creepy guy, but she thinks he is crazy and leaves. The man tries calling his mother on the payphone to calm down, but the lady who picks up tells him she is not home. She is sick with stress in the hospital because his son died. He soon realizes that he had died in the car accident and the creepy guy following him was death.
