The song was written during the Vietnam War and Norman and Barrett were both very anti-war hence, "War, what is it good for absolutely nothing!...friend only to the undertaker..." They were really in tune with the tumultuous times of the late sixties and early seventies, hence, they also wrote "Ball of Confusion", Psychedelic Shack" and "Cloud Nine", among others, which many thought promoted drug use but if you listen carefully to the lyrics it has an anti-drug message. Whitfield never used drugs and never drank alcohol either!

First recorded by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles in 1966 (written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong). The third version was recorded by Gladys Knight and the Pips, in 1967. Marvin Gaye recorded it earlier than Gladys Knight and the Pips but didn't release it until 1968, though it didn't become a major hit until the following year. There was also a cover by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1970. These are the most famous.
