Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a film about uptight Joel Barish (Jim Carey) who meets, falls in love with and begins to date free-spirited Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet). When the couple splits, Joel learns that Clementine has undergone a (fictitious) procedure to erase all memory of him from her mind.
Upset, Joel decides to undergo the same procedure. But during the process, Joel realizes that he cherishes his memories of their time shared, and fights desperately to impede the operation.
Through Joels memory, we go back in time, seeing fragments of the failed relationship; getting to explore the reasons for the split, and what drew Joel and Clementine together to begin with.
The film was the subject of critical acclaim, garnering rave reviews from top critics such as Roger Ebert, and winning Charlie Kaufman the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
