Dick wanted to do that himself so he went after him and saved him just as a knife was about to kill him. That's how he became Robin.

I don't know what episode this is, but I think the series is called Batman: The Animated Series. There is one other version, in the new movie, The Dark Knight Rising you could check out. He doesn't fully become Robin though, at the end Batman retires and it just shows Robin walking into the Batcave. He might become NightWing, though. NightWing is the older version of Robin, after he is done being BatMan's sidekick.
