Even before Aguilar's rendition of "Bayan Ko," Aguilar created and performed songs targeted at social injustices. His album, Magdaleno included songs about a girl forced into prostitution as a result of poverty and the Christian-Muslim clashes in his song Mindanao. After the album, Freddie Aguilar also sang about the injustices suffered by the powerless, poverty, and the arrogance of superpowers in a song about the U.S. and Russia.

Magdalena

They look at you as mud, your image ridiculed

Magdalena you are not being understood

You are destitute, even unfortunate with love

You are uneducated, having no money

REFRAIN

That is why you sought to be hired, being sent to Mabini

From there on, being dubbed as a prostitute

You may not want it, but you don't have any choice

For you need to live in this world

You bear everything, so difficult is the situation

Your dream, of getting out of poverty

[Repeat REFRAIN]

CHORUS

Magdalena, you are so unfortunate

When will they understand you?

Magdalena, you are so unfortunate

When will they understand you?

Magdalena, Magdalena

You wish to change your ways and live in peace

But the world is just so cruel

Until when will you wait, until when will you endure?

Your prayer, when will it be heard?
