Well, I have never heard the song, but Stephen in The Bible was (I believe) the disciple who replaced Judas and he was given the job of feeding the poor and widows, etc. But some people didn't like that because he also preached about Jesus. So they threw rocks at him until he died. (This is called stoning someone.) Stephen became the first Christian martyr but there would be many to follow him. If you want more information on Stephen and who he believed in so much that he would die for him (Jesus) just read the Bible. It may be in Romans or Acts.

To add to the above, the song by Elvis Costello is a tongue in cheek celebration of the murders we would all like to commit on St. Stephen's Day (December 26) after all the feasting and merrymaking of too many drunken relatives hanging around the house at Christmastide has begun to grow exceedingly bothersome. ;)
