Atlantis, the lost empire is a loosely-adapted ( and inaccurate) version of what might have been the First Stilwell Expedition, which was commanded by Joseph Stilwell who gave his name to the Coney Island avenue. There are all kinds of distortions, Stilwell in real life survived the mission, as he was extremely active in World War II in the China-Burma-India theatre. The kid cryptographer in Atlantis, called Philo something was a take off on mystery writer Philo Vance. The plot is distorted and has an unwarranted occult backwash of, well Tsunami proportions. Time was when Science Fiction and the Occult kept their distance! an interesting picture until it got bogged down into the Occult.
