The film is cleverly divided into 3 parts
Before the film's first part begins, we learn that a young male is standing by a tree saying that his ex-girlfriend and he promised to meet by "a special tree" two years after they buried a "time capsule" to see if they still love each other after being separated for two years. The film then jumps to the male protagonist getting ready to get his picture taken.
Part 1
In a flashback, our male protagonist, Gyun-woo, is called by his mother who complains that he has not yet visited his aunt who intends to introduce him to a girl that she thinks resembles her deceased son in order to subdue the sorrow of the girl and herself. Gyun-woo, heading home via subway, sees a wasted girl who is apparently going to get hit by the incoming train. Gyun-woo pulls her out of the path of the subway train moments before it approaches the platform, thus saving her life. After a peculiar train ride, Gyun-woo, decides out of compassion that he must take care of her and thus brings her to a nearest motel and even paying for the room. Ironically, his act of benevolence gets him arrested as there is a there is a misunderstanding about his presence with a wasted women in a motel. Gyun-woo is brought to the police station, imprisoned for the night, and then is released in the morning upon which he then heads home.
This "girl" who he meets at the station refuses to be ill-informed about the previous night and calls Gyun-woo to discuss the details of that night. After a short encounter, we learn that this "Girl" (Her name is never mentioned in the film) is actual fierce and embodies righteousness. We learn this after the Girl overhears a conversation between two grown men and two teenage prostitutes. She refuses to let the prostitutes sell themselves by playing police and thus chasing them away from the grown men. Despise showing solid ethics by defending the naive teenagers; the Girl is unable to control her drinking habits claiming that she broke up with boyfriend yesterday.
The Girl gets wasted once more and Gyun-woo feels obligated to take care of her once more, returning to the same motel as the night before. After buying the Girl some medicine, Gyun-woo marvels over her and says himself privately that he wants to heal her sorrow. Not long after the second encounter, the Girl confronts Gyun-woo during his class in college and convinces the professor to let him have the rest of the day off. The two enjoy the rest of the day at the amusement park and later the Girl reveals that she has a passion for writing. She shows one of her works to Gyun-woo but he rants that it will not be successful because it is not a melodrama. She then tells him of another story while they are on a date at a lake. At that moment she tells him that she, despite dating him, is still unable to forget about her ex-boyfriend.
Gyun-woo is then shown with his friends eating at a restaurant. He claims that he has no girlfriend and that he is about to chase a girl down he just saw pass by the restaurant, claiming that she is his type. The girl he chases down turns out to be the Girl and thus he runs away from her out of embarrassment. He then decides that he is going to do something completely rash by being wasted and hoping that she will rescue him the same way he did for her. It however turns out horribly.
Two days before her 25th birthday, the Girl sends a message to Gyun-woo asking him to prepare something that will make her smile. He, after much thought, decides that he will ask a friend of his working at the amusement park to help prepare a walkway that will lead to a radiant spinning carousel with fireworks. On the day the surprised is supposed to be executed, the two encounter a runaway soldier who rants about his relationship with his ex-girlfriend who loved him for a year but ultimately runs away with another soldier. He keeps Gyun-woo as hostage but after being chased to the carousel by the South Korean military, the Girl convinces him not to kill Gyun-woo and himself and to finish his conscription and find another woman. The soldier thus releases Gyun-woo and surrenders to the military. As he is being taken away, he mentions to the Girl that today is his birthday which is the same day as the Girl's.
Part 2
After the incident, the two decide to meet up at a cafe. Before the Girl arrives, Gyun-woo remembers an event that is reminiscence of his aunt and his cousin before he died. Shortly afterwards, the Girl arrives and shows another story to him and asks him to submit it to an editor. The editor remarks that it is horrible and will not even consider sending it to publishers.
During this time we see the two engaging in more. They play peculiar games on the subway ride home, play Racquetball, and participate in Kendo. The Girl shows her superiority in every single one of these games. The two then meet once more and the Girl complains about her heels hurting her feet. She insist that the two change shoes and Gyun-woo initially refuses but later accepts remembering that giving her what she wants will heal her sorrow. The two then chase each other until late after dusk. Unexpectedly, he meets the Girl's parents while bring her home who seem remain polite in there meeting. When Gyun-woo leaves the complex, he overhears a conversation between the Girl and the Girl's mother. The mother states that she is crestfallen that her daughter has decided to date someone so clumsy.
After the incident, an unspecified hiatus occurs in their relationship, but a day before their 100th day anniversary of meeting each other, the Girl asks him to bring a rose to her piano recital. He does so trying to hide his face as much as possible to avoid awkwardness as he is going to an all-female school. When he finally arrives and gives the rose to the Girl, Gyun-woo receives an ovation from the audience.
The two go on a date once more, "reliving" their teenage years by drinking and going to clubs. After the Girl gets wasted yet again, a contraceptive activist slips a condom into Gyun-woo's pocket asking him to prevent AIDS as the activist thinks that the two are young, horny teenagers. Since the Girl is too drunk to walk, Gyun-woo must carry her home and thus required to have yet another discussion with the Girl's ailing parents. The entire conversation falls apart when the father asks Gyun-woo to empty his pockets, Gyun-woo does so willingly, but the situations becomes foul when the condom is revealed within the items. Gyun-woo is thus shocked and is asked to break up with the Girl, which he does so submissively without rebellion.
Gyun-woo claims that he is free and is thus allowed to date again, a privilege which he executes instantaneously. The dates seem to taint him when he figures out he is dating a man posing as a women. Then, without warning, the Girl asks Gyun-woo to meet with her once more. They talk about the new man that the Girl is meeting and his resemblance of her past boyfriend. After telling her some ground rules of what a man likes in a woman, he heads to the new date and tells him 10 rules that he must follow to make the Girl happy. After the date repeats what Gyun-woo says, the Girl chases after Gyun-woo wanting to tell him that she had finally found someone that understands her.
Unsure of whether the two are meant for one another, the two decide to split up. Before doing so, both write a letter expressing their experiences with one another. While taking a hike, the Girl asks Gyun-woo to go to the opposite hill and try to scream to her. Knowing that he cannot hear her, she screams to the open air that she is sorry that they are unable to be together because she has too much grief. The two hike to the tree shown in the beginning of the fill and prepare to bury the letter within the time capsule and promise to meet two years from now at which point they will read each other's letter and see if they still love one another. They both agree to depart by train, one after the other to assure that they do not meet by accident. Gyun-woo goes first but after a misunderstanding, the Girl ends up boarding first and Gyun-woo is left behind and must wait for the next train. It is now implied that they are now separated and are thus in a long term hiatus.
Part 3
It is unstated of what has happened to the Girl during the time but Gyun-woo is shown to be very active, creating and internet blog about his experience with the Girl, practicing sports, and even sending work to an editor who decides to publish his work, "My Sassy Girl." Finally, the two years pass and he is eager to read the letter that the Girl has left for him two years earlier. However, he is the only one to show up.
Gyun-woo reads the letter. He learns so things he did not know before. He learns that the Girl is dejected because her boyfriend prior to Gyun-woo had not broken up with her, he had died prematurely. She was unable to get over the fact that dating Gyun-woo would hurt the deceased boyfriend memories. She also mentions how important the "tree" and how past boyfriend's mother has been during the healing process. He then reburies the time capsule for the Girl if she ever wants to read his letter.
She does come to the tree, a year after the date they were intended to reunite. While there, an elderly man is resting on the truck and tells her that the tree has a secret. He tells her that the tree that they are sitting under right now is not the same tree as three years ago. It had been struck by lightning and a man decided that the tree has too much importance to be dead and plant a replacement trying his best to make sure it looked the same. It is also imply that this old man represents the "future" Gyun-woo, a topic that the Girl often liked to talk about.
After reading the letter that Gyun-woo has left for her, she decides to forget about her passed, long deceased boyfriend and try to contact Gyun-woo. She tries to call him several times via cell phone but is unable to reach him. As she boards the subway train, the audience notices that Gyun-woo is also trying to catch the same train but is late by a few seconds. As the doors close and the train beings to depart, we see that the Girl is unable to see Gyun-woo who is trying to stop the train and it appears that Gyun-woo and the Girl have failed to meet by coincident, the way the Girl reasons that star-crossed lovers should meet, or for this matter, re-meet.
Still seeking counsel from her deceased boyfriend's mother, she finally agrees to meet the man that the mother has been so eager to introduce to the Girl. The mother asks the Girl one last time is ready to move on. The Girl replies yes and we see the man walks in and start to embrace the mother. The Girl is stunned by who the man is; Gyun-woo. Gyun-woo's aunt, for over 4 years has tried to convince him to meet a girl. It turned out that that "girl" Gyun-woo's auntie wanted to introduce him to was the girl that he was already dating during that same time period. The two hold hands and Gyun-woo's aunt is speechless; the two had been meant for one another. The film concludes with Gyun-woo finishing his narration of the story stating fate is "building a bridge of chance for your love."
