The Cleavers never really had a "continuing" pet on the six seasons of Leave it to Beaver, rather they only had them on certain episodes. In one of the first episodes broadcast in season one (1957) the boys had a puppy called Captain Jack, named after an alligator they ordered from a comic book, which they had to give up once it got too big. Feeling sorry for the children, Ward and June surprised them at the end of the episode with the puppy. The puppy was never seen again. They also had a little dog named Poncho, which only appeared in the episode "Beaver and Poncho."
