The czepina is a tradition that is used by Polish American families to insult and humiliate the newly-married couple. If you are not Polish and particularly if you are not Catholic, you will be told that it is mandatory to wear a sexually-suggestive fruit-covered hat while being subjected to some sort of ridiculous fertility ritual by your obnoxious mother in law. This will be just one of many humiliating demands for the wedding and reception that will be made by your bride's family, who will also expect the newly married couple just starting out to bankrupt themselves to pay for a humiliating and demeaning show of excess to satisfy the family's need to look like bigshots. In appreciation for showing respect to these traditions, the Polish Catholic bride's family will insult, demean and degrade the groom and his family in every way they can think of.

It is also a Polish Catholic cultural tradition to show appreciation for going along with all this by looking down on an continually expressing contempt for the non-Polish Catholic husband over the years, as well as the children born or adopted of this union.
