Louis Courcet is the central character in the play. He is the miracle merchant. He however does not get the reward for the only miracle performed by him in the play. He is Mrs. Beauwhistle's nephew. He is not interested in earning a livelihood. He depends on his relatives.he must have been a permanent guest at the country-house of his aunt, Mrs. Beauwhistle. He is in the habit of asking for loans. He has a brilliant mind. We feel that if he had used his mind in the right way, he would have become a great man. The plan devised by him to get Jane Martlet out of the house is really very brilliant. He prepares the ground nicely for frightening Jane by telling her about the working of the minds of those servants who stay long. The delusions of Sturridge are followed by a good example. The possibility of his having designs on the life of Jane is also well presented. The idea of sending him up with a naked sword is really brilliant. The scheme produces the desired result. Jane is sent out the house. We are all praise for his inventiveness. But when he fails to get the expected loan, we feel sympathy for him. Louis is selfish and greedy. He is clever, cunning and deceitful. His tricks fail. He plays a major role in the play through his trickery. We pity him when he fails to get the expected loan. Louis is brilliant in his power of speech. His phrases sparkle with humor. He prefers indirect expressions to clear speech. This gives his words a charm. For all his faults, we like him immensely.
