This was a derisive code name for the accident prone De Haviland DH-4 actually quite a good airplane used in World War I. Of British design and Canadian manufacture, the Flaming Coffin was never as popular with say, stunt pilots as was the Yellow Peril or Curtiss Jenny ( JN-4) the Jenny had various parts on the wings and underneath them that could be used as handgrips for wing-walkers and other types of stunts- also the yellow paint job ( a kind of anti-camouflage) was far more colorful than the DH-4"s which were tan or Army Olive drab.
