Orochimaru's goal is to uncover the true nature of human chakra and origin of all ninjutsu. He also believes that one can create infinite types of jutsus by merging different combinations of existing jutsus and thus wants to master all of them. Since the lifetime of a human body does not suffice for this, he jumps from one body to another to remain immortal. He was driven to examine the true potential of human body by remorse from witnessing how easily humans die and how much suffering it brings. Though he has no interest in the tailed-beasts or world domination like other characters, his cruel experiments on people with bloodline limit (kenkei gekkai) and ability to manipulate others makes him a primary antagonist.
