The theme for the song 'Eleanor Rigby' is life and death. In the song there is a wedding ceremony which for most is a celebration of life. Then, at the end of the song, Eleanor dies which is the opposite of the wedding's theme.

the church in the song is very symbolic for life and death for obvious reasons.

There is mentions of a wedding which in some cultures is known as a celebration of life

in the end Eleanor rigby dies lonely thus being the opposite: death

Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been

Lives in a dream

Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door

Who is it for?

All the lonely people

Where do they all come from?

All the lonely people

Where do they all belong?

Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear

No one comes near.

Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there

What does he care?

All the lonely people

Where do they all come from?

All the lonely people

Where do they all belong?

Ah, look at all the lonely people

Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name

Nobody came

Father McKenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from her grave

No one was saved

All the lonely people

Where do they all come from?

All the lonely people

Where do they all belong?

Many people believe the song is about two lonely people who meet for the first time after its already too late.

Me personally though, I believe it is about religion. Eleanor puts on her face (like some do before they go to a church. They act different there than in their own house.) and Father McKenzie's sermon isn't heard because no one is truly listening. No one gets the true meaning. NO ONE COMES NEAR to getting it. The lonely people describe the people without god, which is what Eleanor was.

Ah, Look at all the lonely people, where do they belong? Is saying well, where do the nonreligious go? and the "No one was saved" when Father McKenzie buried her, is because he never had the chance to save her. (Into Christ.)

That's just my opinion though.
