This depends on a variety of things, although there are main types:

  • Composer - Usually somebody who composes a minimalistic, or even classical piece of music. Such examples include Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and others. However, you could consider anybody a "composer" of music as long as they have written it themselves, (as in either into a musical score or other ways) like John Williams, who composed many movie themes such as Jurassic Park and Star Wars.
  • Artist - Usually anybody who has written a song, (as in with lyrics and melody, usually.) Anybody from the earliest forms of music to even other forms of music can be artists of music. You could call Adele an artist, although the main difference is that people wouldn't consider her a composer, more of an artist.
  • Writer - Somebody who writes music, in basic terms. They usually do not perform it themselves, as it is usually written for somebody else.

Hope this helps :)
