The ETC is an automatic payment device for the toll roads in Japan. Most hi-ways are toll roads and the tolls are not cheap, most ranging from 240 yen to 1680 yen ($2.50 to $17.00). You can run into as many as seven of these toll booths in a normal commute. The device is mounted in your car with a sensor. It has a card slot to insert a pre-paid card which allows you to blow through the ETC lane in the toll booth. Each pass through the toll booth gets deducted from your card. The device also has a speaker which notifies you of an upcoming toll booth as well as a low balance on your card (but is only useful if you speak Japanese). The card can be recharged at most convenience stores.
