What is Steven universe about?

Steven Universe is a coming-of-age story told from the perspective of Steven, the youngest member of the Crystal Gems, a team of magical guardians who protect the Earth. Steven takes his mother's place in a group of gemstone-based beings, and must learn to control his powers. The first episode of Steven Universe is fun and silly-and that's about it. A chubby little boy with a big smile goes home to find three women beating up monsters. We get to see Steven's shield in the first episode as well. Steven learns at the end of the episode that he can't summon his weapon by eating ice cream but will one day learn how to activate his shield. In a later episode Steven meets Connie and she is a very important character to the story.
