Mary first became famous for stage work, and then she starred in silent films. She's famous for being the first big movie star. There were many silent film stars, but she's considered by many to be the first actual movie star. Later, she invested in the start-up company United Artists with Charlie Chaplin, and her first husband Douglas fairbanks. United Artists struggled with financial losses after World War II. By the early 1950s, Mary Pickford sold her stock in United Artists. She also had an invested interest in Goldwyn studios, which she liquidated as well. By the mid 1950s, she was in her mid 60s, and her career as a studio executive was at its end. Throughout her life, she occupied her free time with charitable events and social causes. By the 1960s, life had passed her by. she remained comfortable at her pickfair estate, with her second husband buddy rogers by her side, until she passed away in the late 1970s. Mary had a niece named Gwynne, who married George "Bud" Orenstein, who in the 1950s assumed management of United Artists of Europe.
