Gollum is afraid of many things in his life: capture by the Orcs (goblins), Men, and later, the Dark Lord, but most of all he lives in fear of having his Precious Ring of Power lost to him. The Evil Ring has been with Gollum for so long that it has totally corrupted his mind, and he is addicted to having it with him at all times.
