I'm pretty sure the infection will cause your internal organs to explode. That's what happened to Marlena.

Edited by Eric: I am pretty sure the bacteria produced gas, and the buildup of bubbles caused the capillaries to burst. It was worst in the internal organs, and when enough capillaries were destroyed, the internal organs lost pressure and were destroyed. The bacteria must have been designed to do this, otherwise the gassing would have been gradual
