At the last scene you see Ottway's head leaning un against the Alpha wolf's dying corpse; you can bet Ottway's character had his fair share of wounds (as did the dying wolf). Ultimately, Ottway will have been rushed by the remaining wolves and then gone onto determining the next Alpha. Man struggles with survival, as the poem Ottways recited says.
