During the night, while the boys are asleep, 10 miles above the island a battle is taking place. Although the flashes are visible the sounds that are made cannot be heard. The dead body of one pilot, which is attached to a parachute, slowly drifts down through the air, buffeted and subjected to changes of direction by the wind. The body of the dead parachutist eventually lands on the mountain top.

At the begining of the book Piggy and Ralph discuss how they reached the island and the basic story is that they were being evacuated away from the war zone by airplane. During a storm the plane was atatcked and the "passenger tubes" was ejected. The "passenger tube" crash landed on the island during the night and was soon after dragged out to sea by the large waves caused by the storm, with some of the boys (and presumably any adults) who were still on board. The scar in the jungle was made by the "passenger tube" when it crash landed.

When Ralph, Simon and Jack climb the mountain the discover for certain that they are indeed on an island. They can see it stretched out below them in a shape that resembles a boat. Ralph comments that he can't see any smoke or boats and suggests that this probably indicates that the island has no other inhabitants. On their way back to the beach they discover that there are pigs on the island.

Simon collapsed after his epileptic fit and when he regained consciousness he climbed to the top of the mountain to settle once and for all what was up there. he discovered the dead body of the airman and untangled the parachute lines so that it no longer moved in the wind. While bathing in the pool near to the Shelters Ralph and Piggy realised that all the other boys had gone to Jacks feast. Eventually they decided to go too. At the feats Jack gave out meat and asked the boys to join his tribe. Ralph protested that he was the chosen chief and then pointed out, as the storm threatened, that he had shelters while Jack had none. As evening fell and lightning flashed Jack told his tribe to dance, so they danced in a circle and chanted their pig chant. Simon, having staggered down from the mountain and through the jungle, stumbled on to the beach close to the dance. In the flickering fire light and flashes of lightning the over excited dancing and chanting boys mistook Simon for the beast. On mass the boys attacked him, stabbing, hitting, clubbing and biting him to death. The storm broke and as rain poured down the dead body of the airman, which had earlier been freed from the rocks on the mountain top by Simon, drifted down over the beach and the lagoon sending the terrified boys running away screaming.

There is a nuclear war going on in the outside world. Piggy mentions an 'atom bomb' and that the airport has been destroyed. It is implied that the boys were dropped after an air battle, and that their plane was also destroyed. The book was written during the beginnings of the Cold War, and the events on the island are a microcosm of world events. Golding had a Horror of war, and wished to show the possibility for evil within all of humanity, and how we so easily descend into savagery.

The chapter begins with Henry and two other littluns playing together on the beach, the other two drift away leaving Henry alone. Roger watches from behind a palm tree and starts to throw stones close to Henry. Maurice turns up and Roger goes with him to the jungle where Jack is applying paint to his face. Jack and his hunters go on a pig hunt. Ralph and the other boys are playing and relaxing in the pool when Ralph spots a ship far out at sea. He notices that there is no smoke coming from their signal fire on the mountain top. Ralph runs straight there, naked and torn by creepers and branches, to find the fire out and no boys are on fire duty. He is joined presently by some of the other boys and then Jack and his hunters arrive carrying a dead pig. Jack enthuses about the hunt until Ralph points out that the fire has gone out. Jack explains that he needed the boys who were on fire duty to join in the pig hunt. Ralph tells him that a ship had sailed by and they have failed to be rescued because the fire was out. Piggy joins in the verbal assault and Jack attacks him, resulting in one lens of Piggy's glasses being broken. The fire is lit again, to the side of its original position because Ralph is standing in the ashes and nobody has the nerve to ask him to move. Jack's hunters cook the pig and share it out. Jack refuses to give any meat to Piggy but Simon gives him his own share. Ralph tells them he is going to the platform and he will call a meeting.
