At the end of the first season, Trent promises Sam he'll sober up and is seen at a therapy group session. Then in the second season, he pretty much disappears from the show with no closure whatsoever. The only thing they said about him was that he was clean and sober and lived in San Fransisco at a coffee shop (I think). This was when Sam was going through Alicia's things and found her picture of him. Then when Alicia leaves Charles University, she says she's leaving for San Fransisco to meet up with Trent. So basically he's no longer in the story in The Best Years, but personally, I liked Trent so I wish the show at least wrote in a closure to his part of the story.
