cato cut a big gap in it. but the thing that actualy happens is that peeta saves katniss and then catocuts his leg with his sword and then peeta gose in to hiding for the rest of the games until katniss finds him.

At the end of the book, the mutts come out. When Katniss and Peeta are trying to get up on the cornucopia to get away from them, one of the mutts bites Peeta's leg as Katniss tries to pull him up. They are unable to save the leg and it has to be amputated.

Near the end of "The Hunger Games" novel, yes and got an artificial leg. But in the movie his leg is miraculously healed and does not need to be cut off.
