Bill Stapleton was born in Blue Island, Illinois, on the 4th of May 1945. He died on the 14th of July in 1984, way too soon. I had the absolute pleasure of watching him play many times in Bill Holman's big band. He played on Woody Herman's albums, "Giant Steps" and "The Raven Speaks." You can see Bill Stapleton performing the John Coltrane piece, "Lazybird."http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlMgn8T8WCY&feature=relatedOther albums on which he played include: THE RODGER FOX BIG BAND's "No Exit." STAN KENTON's "Horns of Plenty."Bill Stapleton is included in Scott Yanow's book, "Trumpet Kings: The Players Who Shaped the Sound of Jazz Trumpet."

Unfortunately the musicians are not credited in the movie. The trumpet solo in Balu's song "bare necessities" as well as its reprise at the end of the movie is most likely played by Cappy Lewis, an excellent big band and session trumpet player at that time, working with Woody Herman, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman and others.Louis Prima, lending his voice to King Louie, is unlikely to play the trumpet solo. Although a fine trumpet player, the solos exceed his technical skills. He can be seen playing the trumpet in some improvisation scenes during the recording of the soundtrack however. These scenes were used by the animators as inspiration for King Louie's monkey band.
Herman bought them in the early 80's I believe and sold boots under the Herman Santa Rosa brand. The Santa Rosa trademark expired in the late 70's so they may not have been producing shoes/boots when Herman bought the brand. Not sure if Herman bought the company or just the rights to the brand. Of course Herman was later purchased by Wal-Mart. Check with the historical society for Santa Rosa. They might have more info.
